This week has been about writing. Monday we read "By Any Other Name" which lead us into a conversation about the importance of names. Names are a significant part of our identity and have been given to us for different reasons, and amazingly have managed to fit personality. To get the writing started on Tuesday, we had a free "journal" reflection writing session about names that turned into a rough draft- due Wednesday. Wednesday, we spent the short time we had (it was an early release day) doing a writer's workshop in small groups using that same rough draft. Students are to take the feedback from Wednesday and their knowledge of stylistic choices writers make to submit a final draft on Friday, Sept. 1st. The formal piece of writing was also on Tuesday, August 29. Students wrote one small CEI paragraph answering the prompt, "To what degree does cultural identity impact a person's perspective?" Then, students were to use evidence from the story "By Any Other Name" (one sentence), and then write 3 sentences of interpretation. This was submitted at the end of class. I will be giving students feedback on their writing on Tuesday.

Our primary focus has been on finishing the sub-culture project and presenting them to the class. There was a vocab quiz on 8/18 and there will be another one on 8/25. No new words were given on Monday 8/21, so the quiz on the 25th will be on ALL 20 words from unit 6 over usage: sentences and examples. There will not be any definitions on the quiz. We had a great eclipse day on the 21st and now that presentations are finished, we are starting to shift our focus from answering "What is cultural identity?" to the emotions associated with culture. A synthesis chart 2.0 is helping organize our thoughts on the past four pieces of literature and will help us keep organized when reading the next three pieces. Currently we are reading "By Any Other Name" as well as practicing CEI form writing. (Students will have notes in their notebooks about two types of lead-ins to use with their evidence/ quotes from the text along with what information is to be included in their interpretation.) They will have submitted one CEI paragraph answering "What is cultural identity?" by the end of the week. These will not be graded but they will receive specific feedback on their writing before we begin the final assessments for this unit. *hint* one of the two assessments will be a written piece. Independent reading is becoming our "thing." It is what we do at the beginning of every class period. Why? For a number of reasons but mostly because books are worth reading and it is important to have time to enjoy doing just that- reading.
On Wednesday and Thursday (8/16 & 8/17) we reviewed vocabulary and continued to work on the project. Don't forget that it is due by 11:59PM on the 17th. Below the images show you what to do to "share" your work (share and then enter my email address: [email protected]). Refer to your notes for all other details. We will begin presentations on Friday the 18th after the vocabulary quiz. Come prepared with your note cards. Monday 8/14 we began with Unit 6B Vocabulary (words 11-20) -quiz Friday, and did a little speed-dating... speed-dating books to begin Independent Reading. Tuesday 8/15- Began the day with 15 minutes of independent reading. Did some vocab review and went over subcultures using "6 Things You Should Know..." and a brief video. Students were assigned their culture presentation assignment and were given time to work with laptops. Use Google Slides to create the project and be sure to name it "Last Name, blk#, culture" before you "share" it, which is how you will turn it in Thursday night by 11:59PM. Example: Hillgrove Teacher Culture Right now we are exploring the essential question "What is Cultural Identity?" through various mediums: video, articles, stories, poetry, and art. There will be two major assessments with this unit.
The stories and poems we read are on in the Springboard textbook, which remain in the classroom. However, here are all the pieces that are found in the Unit One textbook: unit one pdf If ever you are absent- please see what you missed that day so you may return to school caught-up. The expectations are that as we read, you mark the text: CIRCLE any word you don't know, place and EXCLAMATION MARK next to anything that is important to the reading purpose, and place a QUESTION MARK next to any part that is unclear, creates a question in your mind, or is a point worth of discussion (ie- a discussion question).
